Treatment Fibromyalgia

Treatment fibromyalgia

     Currently, there is no treatment for fibromyalgia. Treatment fibromyalgia is focused on addressing pain, fatigue, depression and other fibromyalgia symptoms, hoping to break the vicious circle of low tolerance to pain and in physical activity decreasing.

     Treatment fibromyalgia may include:

  • Sleep medications as tricycles antidepressants, selective serotonin inhibitor antidepressants, a skeletal muscle relaxant;
  • Medicines to reduce muscle and joint pain as tricycles antidepressants or, rarely, free prescription analgesics;
  • Physiotherapy to decrease muscle pain and increase the energy.

     You should pay attention to the signs of depression or anxiety, common in people with fibromyalgia! They can be successfully treated if recognized and discussed with your doctor.

     Many people with fibromyalgia also have other joint or muscle diseases (for example rheumatoid arthritis or lupus), which also must be treated. Any new symptoms appeared or increased physician has to be notified.

 Fibromyalgia is a progressive disease and does not lead to permanent physical dysfunction. However, symptoms can be debilitating and patients may experience periods where it feels worse than usual. If new symptoms are present or the already existing ones are getting worse, we recommend discussing them with your doctor. The doctor can assess the treatment. Medications must be adjusted or new medicines can be tried. Maybe the patient do much exercise or too little.

     At the same time it is possible that the changes to be correlated with symptoms of other diseases besides fibromyalgia. Your doctor can assess this possibility but only if the patient communicate with him.

Medication choices for treatment fibromyalgia:

     Medicines do not cure fibromyalgia. However some medicines may help improve the symptoms, particularly muscle pain and sleep disorders. Not all patients with fibromyalgia will need, want or benefit from pharmacological treatment, but people with severe pain, sleep disturbances or depression, may find them useful.

     Antidepressants are often used for treating the symptoms of fibromyalgia. This does not mean that the patient imagine their disease. Antidepressants may help by improving sleep and mood or by blocking pain signals. Many people with fibromyalgia appear to benefit from treatment with these drugs.

     Medicines are often combined to achieve the most effective treatment fibromyalgia for pain and sleep disturbances. Some types of antidepressants can be used to improve sleep, relieve pain and in some cases for depression.

     Tricycle antidepressants can improve sleep and may provide a decrease in pain. Selective serotonin inhibitors reduce depression and improve sleep. A muscle relaxant may be used also for muscle pain and sleep. This product is similar to tricycle antidepressants.

     Painkillers or anti-inflammatory drugs are usually not effective in controlling fibromyalgia symptoms. They can be used to reduce symptoms of flare-ups. Consult a physician if the patient still requires such medicines as it may affect the stomach, kidneys or, more rarely, the liver. The doctor will require monitoring the patient if he manages its daily drugs.

     Generally, drug therapy is not useful for treatment fibromyalgia. They can interrupt the periodicity of symptoms, can reduce pain and sleep disorders, may improve a flare, but they are usually part of a larger treatment plan that focuses on exercise and other treatment.

     Painkiller drugs and sleeping pills which lead to addiction are rarely used to treat fibromyalgia. They are often inefficient and time addictive.

Careful monitoring is recommended for adults and children in treatment with antidepressants, in order to observe early signs of suicide. It also recommended, when monitoring patients to increase awareness of anxiety, panic attacks, agitation, anxiety, insomnia, impulsivity, hostility and anger. It is very important the oversight of these behaviors in children who are less able to control their impulsiveness than adults and therefore presents a greater risk for suicidal intent. It is not recommended to stop using antidepressants, but the monitoring of those using this type of treatment and in case of appearance of new signs, to contact the doctor.
